Potty Training with Pull-Ups Big Kid Academy

Thank you to Pull-Ups for sponsoring today's post & helping me Potty Train with the Big Kid Academy.

Potty training your toddler. Every parent goes through it. Sometimes it's a piece of cake, others...not so much. But luckily for all of us, Pull-Ups Big Kid Academy is there with us every step of the way!

Hayden, my adorable & feisty little toddler, is officially on her way to being a big girl. We've ditched the diapers, loaded up on Pull-Ups (Doc McStuffins of course) & made a big deal about it every step of the way. You see, every child is different & for her, it's like she's rehearsing for her Emmy win.

5 Key Steps for Potty Training Girls

Watch for cues - So how did I know that Hayden was finally ready to buckle down & hop on the potty train? Well, it was simple, she told me. No, she didn't exactly say that she was ready (at least not like that), but letting me know immediately after she soiled her diaper (or occasionally before), was a sure sign.

Go the extra mile -Here's a couple tricks that I have up my sleeve. Since everything must be a huge production for my little one, a standard pack of Pull-Ups just wouldn't do. We went big (go big or go home, right?) & purchased one of the Doc McStuffins Pull-Ups Starter Kit (a.k.a. - the treasure chest!). Not only can she use the chest for whatever her little heart desires, but it also comes with Big Kid flushable wipes, a progress chart, reward stickers, a free Disney digital book & a coupon booklet.

Be persistent & develop a routine - Of course persistence & a routine are the building blocks of potty training. I have to keep track of when she drinks, so that we can go sit on the potty about 10 minutes later (& for at least 5 minutes). Every morning when she wakes up & every night before she goes to bed are important too. Not to mention much easier to get her in the swing of when she sees me doing the same thing.

Use any resources available - Of course I'm no potty training expert. But I did sign up for Pull-Ups Big Kid Academy! (Hey, that's got to count for something, right?) There you'll find everything you need when it comes to potty training your toddler. Fun activities like learning the Potty Dance, tips & advice (from parenting experts, medical professionals & regular parents...like you!), a list of products & coupons.

Reward accordingly - But the best part, will be Hayden's ultimate reward! Of course peeing in the potty earns a sticker on her chart. But pooping in the potty gets her a "pooping in the potty princess party with pink cupcakes"! (Shout out to our family doctor for his amazing idea!)

What are some of your tips & tricks when it comes to potty training?

  1. You go mom! We potty trained my son at 28 Mon in 2 days. He was ready... Telling us he had to go before he went. The first few days we had him walk around the house without pants or diaper/underwear on. Then he had one accident after we got him big boy underwear. After that he remembered how uncomfortable it was and has been accident free since. Your having her go when she wakes up and goes to bed is perfect! We also let my son do everything... Turn the bathroom light on, put his stool in place, lift the toilet seat, flush and wash his hands. He's very independent and this seems to help him feel in control. Best of wishes to you and Hayden... You got this!

    1. Thanks Sydney! I let her empty the potty, flush & have her wash her hands, but I never thought about letting her do everything else too.

  2. I always used Pull Ups when my boys were training. They worked well and fit great.

  3. I remember more tricks & tips when I trained my son than when I trained my daughter since I was trying to teach him to pee standing up.

  4. I agree, being persistent and having a routine worked here too. My last of four was the only one who took it slow...but that's okay, we still kept the routine. :) We used Pull Ups too, those were great.

  5. I'm still trying to get my toddler to use the potty. We've been at it but I admit I'm not consistent since I'm not at home with her during the day. We mostly try on weekends and although she knows when she goes she never tells you before but only after.

  6. Oh, you are SO close to no diapers, you can do it! :) I always bribed with Skittles LOL Also, with boys, Cheerios in the toilet helps them to learn how to aim!

  7. I have 2 Granddaughters who are the age where they will need potty trained... SOON!! I think Pull Ups are a great idea. So much easier when you are in a rush to get the diaper off.

  8. Oh we love pull ups and now that there is Doc McStuffins we are bigger fans (its whats on tv right now too!)

  9. I tried several "tricks" with my son before realizing that bribes wouldn't work with him. Just making sure that we used the potty AS SOON AS he mentioned he needed to use it worked for us. (I did try m&ms, a sticker chart and other things before I realized he didn't want/need any of those incentives.)

  10. wow look at your little one growing up. It's been forever since son was small and I went through potty training.

  11. Im exactly at the potty-training stage with my daughter. Luckily it's going better than it went with my son. Nothing to do but keep at it and remind ourselves that they will grow someday and we will miss these moments!

  12. This is a great idea. Potty training can be as difficult for parents as it is for kids. Anything that helps with that is great!

  13. Don't worry Melissa. It's going to happen. We're all hard wired to eventually stop going potty on ourselves. It's just a matter of time and patience. The Pull Ups Big Kid Academyh is a great way to encourage her, though. Keep it up!

  14. My trick was that I let her decorate her potty with stickers. It gave her a sense of ownership.

  16. These are great tips. I think the biggest misstep with potty training is making a huge deal about accidents. It's so important to keep our calm and carry on. Keep in mind that poop is the last thing that they'll want to give up. Don't force it either since the anxiety can cause the kids to hold it in and that can turn into a health issue.

  17. This help kids on potty training. They would be more supported with this one and also would learn faster.

  18. I was laid back in this area and did not start until my boys were 3. A potty watch helped my boys.

  19. I would have no idea where to start with potty training not being a Mum - I know some of my friends are however going through it. x

  20. We've been potty training here in Georgia and I just love Big Kid pull-ups. I need to check out Pull-Ups Big Kid Academy. Thanks so much for sharing.

  21. i worked so hard to train my daughter too young and then she had me trained. my son just announced one day he was done with diapers and he was.

  22. Lucky we are not in that arena for that anymore.. but i know some people who are approaching this..

  23. Those pull ups are adorable. We constantly offer the opportunity to have the kids use the potty.

  24. I found out that going cold turkey worked best for my son. No diapers at night or pulluos just straight to big boy underwear and using the real toilet! I tried the other methods briefly and he was not interested, just content with walking around in it until he only had underwear on then it happened instantly!

  25. Our potty training with my daughter is getting me down now :(

  26. Def stick with a routine, that is key! I also have mop water, paper towels and a lot of undies ready! We tend to use Pull Ups when out of the house when we are training.

  27. What a great tool kit. I was lost when it was time to potty train. So I asked other moms and ended up doing potty training in a day with Dr Phil. I guess I just was too lazy to do the pull ups thing.

  28. They're so smart for adding in the little extra incentives. Those are a big deal!

  34. I'm about to start with my son. He just turned two!

  35. haha. I love the reward for pooping! That's great! :)

  36. Its great you are having success. My two year old did great for 2 weeks because of the help of big brother, then when I failed to prompt him to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes, he just peed or pooped on the floor. After months of that, he's back in pull ups from going right into underwear. I think we started too early. Might wait til he's three.

  37. We used pull ups but only because he refused to potty train for 7 months after he was dry at night. We attempted to train, but 1st day back at nursery was a disaster so left him in pull ups until he decided to do it himself. Much more straight forward, and he did it himself with only 2 accidents in 2 days.

  38. I love that these feature Doc McStuffins. She is really popular with kids lately.

  39. Potty training can be challenging and yes, letting do some things by themselves helps boost their confidence.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hated potty training, but you have to get it done. Great tips! So glad I am through it after four kids!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I really have no tips. I just wait until I know they are really ready. I found it is the easiest way to potty train.

    ReplyDelete
  42. So many great resources! I didn't have that much help with my first two. It would have been nice.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I used pull-ups for potty training both my kids. They are a great training tool.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Pull ups are great! Love how they have such cute characters on them.

    ReplyDelete
  45. What a great way to encourage little ones to use the potty. I am a huge fan of Pull-Ups and used them with my kids and I am sure I will use them with my baby when needed.

  46. I'm so glad that my potty training days are over. It was much easier to train our younger son than our older son.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Pull ups are a great help to parents. I never knew these existed before. My mom and dad must have been so patient.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I haven't used pull ups in such a long time. I like how they have kids characters on them. They certainly are helpful when potty training.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is such a challenging time, but it is so great when they learn! Amber N

  51. I'm so glad I'm out of the potty training stage with my kids! Pull ups were LIFE savers though!

  52. Pull ups are wonderful, and as far as any tips there's only one word I have for you! BRIBERY!!! It works every time! :) I remember asking my son what did you want more then anything... and he said he wanted a new legos. So I told him that if he went potty every time he had to go all day long I would take him shopping for more legos. Of course he went potty about fifty times that day to make sure he didn't wet, but he did it. I also told him he had to keep up the good job or I would take them away. They're not really a tool. They're just to help you and him to avoid a mess. It doesn't help them not go.

  53. I truly thing the experience of others like is offered in big kids academy can help both the mom and the child. Pullups surely help in the process too.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think pull ups are a great invention and wish they were around years ago. I think making sure the child is actually ready is the most important thing.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Wow! On potty training now!
    Cute designs you have there!

In a few months time i'll do the potty training too for my little one.. though she's into cloth diapers.. :) Might be buying pull up cds too! :)

  56. I'll never forget the advice our pediatrician gave us when we started potty training. Don't worry too much, be patient, they won't go to college in diapers. Pull ups are a God send and the reward system is very helpful.

  57. Thanks for the post. We are currently potty training as well and use pull-ups in the routine at nights.

    ReplyDelete
  58. We used Pull-Ups when my son was potty training. They were a big help! I am so glad those days are over, though!

  59. Yay for Doc McStuffins! Love the kindness in that show... so using her on pullups are good in my book!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Pull Ups were front and center in our house. Kiddo is 9 now so those days are long gone.

    ReplyDelete
  61. These are so cute. I chose not to do pull ups because they were to much like diapers. I of course spent time washing undies a bit more but it was all good we are now long past that face thank goodness.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Aww she is so adorable. We will be going through the same thing with our two year old here soon because she hides behind things to poop. I think she's ready!

    ReplyDelete
  63. We're still potty training and my toddler might actually not want to pee on Doc if she gets these lol

    ReplyDelete
  64. Both my girls were trained at 20 mths. It was easier with my older one because she loved to flush after doing her thing, so it literally took her about two days and the younger one was done within a week. I agree being persistent is very important.

    ReplyDelete
  65. We loved pull ups when ours were potty training. Of course they were like bob the builder back then.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Routines and rewards were the key when potty training my oldest two. I'm hoping the third and fourth times are the same. :-) If not, I'm coming back to this list! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  67. omg! i love that sticker and chart idea wish i knew that before when my daughter was a still a baby

    ReplyDelete
  68. Having pull ups with his favorite character really helped me son feel like a big kid. This really helped while we were potty training.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Its been over a decade since we had to use diapers, but pull ups were definitely the brand of choice back then. Thanks for the post. :)

  70. You are almost to the finish line!! We loved pullups but glad those days are behind us now lol!
