Custom Printed Tee by Allied Shirts

Have you ever had the need to get custom printed tees, but had no clue where to get them? I have & I have to say that I never got them printed. Most places just had too high of a price, or the quality just wasn't worth it. That's why I was excited when the kind folks from Allied Shirts, offered me the opportunity to review one of their custom printed tees.

I knew exactly what I was going to get on my tee so I was eager to start the process. Well, eager & a bit apprehensive since I had never designed a tee online before. But I was relieved at just how simple it was.

Fresh out of the package!

I started with a Budget Short Sleeve tee (long sleeve tees, women's tees & sweatshirts are also available). The Budget tee is a Gildan Ultra Cotton tee, that to me, rivals the quality of the Classic Hanes Beefy tee option. (There's also a Fashion tee.) Then all I had to do was add text or art to the front & back. I opted for an uploaded image on the front & text on the back. Note for all athletes: You can even get names & numbers on the back for t-shirt jerseys.

Checking out was simple too. After choosing a size (youth, adult & plus options) & quantity (quantity discounts available), you just enter your shipping & billing info.

*Free Standard Shipping (10 business days)*

The front of my corrected tee.

Allied Shirts states that they'll contact you if there's an issue with your order, but I have to say that's not necessarily true. When I got my tee, it looked like my 2 year old did it (except the text on the back of course). But here's where Allied Shirts totally redeems themselves. After a phone call & a couple of emails with one of their Customer Love members, I found out that the resolution quality of my uploaded artwork was low (unbeknownst to me). But after emailing a much higher resolution, all was taken care of. I just wish there would have been a resolution checker of some sorts for after artwork was uploaded.

Text on the back.

After I received my shirt & wore it, I realized something was a bit off. I finally figured it out, it was a size smaller. I checked the tags between my two shirts & they both said large, but my corrected tee was clearly a medium. I'm not holding that against Allied Shirts though because a.) they just print the shirts, they don't make them. And b.) It happens! No matter what retailer you shop at, it's bound to happen sometime. It still fit fine, just not as loose as I had originally planned.

I think it may actually fit perfect now, despite the sizing difference.

All in all, I have to say that despite the resolution issue with the first tee & the smaller size with the second, I would definitely order tees from Allied Shirts . They have quality tees (that still look great after washing by the way), great prices & an awesome Customer Love department.

Messy Monday: Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

Do you have a dishwasher? Do you hate constantly having to buy detergent for it? Of course those little action-pacs, or whatever they're called, get the job done. But boy, are they expensive! Especially if your house is like mine where you can easily run the dishwasher twice a day.

•5C. Borax
•3 1/2C. Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
•12pkg. lemonade flavored Kool-Aid
•1 1/2C. Epsom salt

- Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl.
- Place in a large airtight container for storage.

To use: Add 1Tbsp. dishwasher detergent to soap dispenser.

I still use a store bought rinse aid with mine since I've noticed that vinegar just doesn't seem to do a very good job with this detergent.

* This detergent will harden over time. Just scrape off the top & continue to use.

* This recipe can easily be doubled, just use a whole box of both the Borax & the Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (saves from counting so many C's).

Simple Sunday: My Houseplant

This is my houseplant. Singular. As in one. I don't remember what kind it is because honestly, I didn't think it would live past a week or two, so I didn't bother remembering. But not only has it lived for almost 2 years, but it is now 3 shoots instead of 1. I'm pretty impressed by myself (thank goodness this plant is very forgiving when I forget to water it...which is often).

Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day!

Today is the day! The day the KD community unites as one to let everyone know about Kawasaki Disease. Of course, we do this on a daily basis, but today we go above & beyond our normal ways. Red porch lights, red clothing, fliers, posters, signs in our yards, buttons, cookies....the list goes on.

Kawasaki disease (KD), also known as Kawasaki syndrome, is a serious illness characterized by inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body that primarily affects young children and infants. Kawasaki disease is the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children. Although about 80 percent of patients are under five years of age, older children and teenagers can also get KD, but this is uncommon. KD is more common in boys than girls, and the majority of cases are diagnosed in the winter and early spring. It is not contagious.

Kawasaki Disease is characterized by an inflammation of the blood vessels throughout the body. There is no specific test for KD; doctors make a clinical diagnosis based on a collection of symptoms and physical findings.
Early symptoms of KD include:
Fever that lasts for five or more days & is unresponsive to meds
Rash, often worse in the groin area
Red bloodshot eyes, without drainage or crusting
Bright red, swollen, cracked lips, "strawberry" tongue, which appears with shiny bright red spots after the top coating sloughs off
Swollen hands and feet and redness of the palms and soles of the feet
Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

NOTE: My daughter, Paige, had atypical or incomplete Kawasaki Disease. Meaning that she did not have all of the symptoms.

Just in case you're a visual learner.

Without treatment, about 25% of children develop heart disease involving the coronary arteries. Timely diagnosis and treatment (which usually includes intravenous gamma globulin within a 10 day window) is highly effective in preventing coronary complications. Doctors continue to study the long-term outcome of children who do not appear to have coronary involvement.

A better picture of the man who has saved the lives of so many children,
Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki
Below is a video that shows the effects that Kawasaki Disease has on a child's heart. Written & produced by Dr. Jane C. Burns, MD, the director of the Kawasaki Disease Research Center at UCSD/Rady Children’s Hospital.

As a KD parent, I have to say that I am beyond thankful that so many people know about Kawasaki Disease today. And a large part of that has to do with celebrity status.

It's Sarah Chalke!

Did you see this episode of Grey's Anatomy? I watched it & bawled like a baby, along with every other KD mother out there I'm sure. But Sarah Chalke wasn't just playing a part. She was in a way, reliving a nightmare. Sarah is a KD mom herself & thanks to this particular episode entitled, "Can't Fight This Feeling,", millions of people were made aware of Kawasaki Disease.

So remember...

For my KD kid, Paige.

This is Paige a few years ago, with her bracelet.

Snacktastic Saturday: Tomato Salad

I swear, the colder it gets, the more summertime foods I tend to eat. And one that I've been eating a lot of lately is Tomato Salad.

•tomatoes, diced
•avocado, diced
•green onion, thinly sliced
•vinaigrette dressing of your choice (I used Brianna's Homestyle Blush Wine Vinaigrette)
•salt & pepper to taste

- Using desired amounts, mix ingredients together.

Enjoy!

Fun Friday: Damienosaurus Canvas

We've finally decided on dinosaurs for my 4 year olds room. Yes, we've been in this house almost a year, but he was torn between the usual boy things; cars, trucks, tractors, trains & dinosaurs. But now that he's decided, I had to paint a special canvas just for him.

The sun rays coming through the blinds make the canvas look pretty cool, don't you think?

I just googled "dinosaur templates" & printed this long neck. Not only is it one of his favorites, but it was easy to paint too. And since I decided to call it a "Damienousaurus", I'm sure he'll end up with a variety of dinosaur canvas' with family inspired names. Haydenodactyl? Paigeceratops?

Sheila G's Brownie Brittle & a Giveaway!

It happens every time I decide to bake a pan of brownies, you know, the ones that are crispy around the edges & gooey in the middle. The pan comes out, I sprinkle them with powdered sugar, wait a bit & cut them. Just a little bit longer for them to cool & I can eat one. I get sidetracked doing a million other things & suddenly remember my brownies. I go to get an edge piece (my favorite) & realize that all that's left is the gooey rectangle center! (Insert dramatic cries here.)

Luckily for me (& I'm sure a million others), there's a solution. Sheila G's Brownie Brittle.

Sheila G. Mains could very well be considered a confectionery genius. After gathering the brittle batter from sheet pans while the brownies were cooling on racks, she wondered how she could create a whole pan of crunchy edges. Obviously she figured it out, but she also figured out how to have amazingly delicious flavors too!

Chocolate Chip

I was pleased to see the millions of chocolate chips covering every piece of Brownie Brittle. OK, there weren't millions, but there was a lot!

Toffee Crunch

I'm not really a toffee fan, but this was amazing! Amidst the crunch of the Brownie Brittle, there was just a slight stickiness from the toffee. Actually it's the stickiness that usually turns me off when it comes to toffee, but this really was the perfect amount. Which means that this was the favorite of my toffee loving hubs.

Salted Caramel

I am a huge fan of salted caramel anything, so I was downright giddy when I saw this flavor. The best part was that you could taste salted caramel & chocolate brownie in every bite! Needless to say, these didn't last very long.

Mint Chocolate Chip

My favorite flavor by far! Of course this was my oldest daughter's favorite flavor too, so it lasted about a day. Which honestly shocked me since I thought we were going to devour the bag in 20 min. Talk about willpower!

Of course it was after the fact that I even realized there were recipes. Which basically just means that I have to get more Brownie Brittle because I have a Pumpkin Pie with a Brownie Brittle Crust calling my name. (You hear it too, don't you?)

But the best part about Sheila G's Brownie Brittle is there involvement with Cookies for Kids' Cancer. Click here to find out how you can help too.

Wish you had some of Sheila G's Brownie Brittle right now?

Well, you can't have it right now, but one  lucky winner will receive a 4 pack sampler!

The giveaway will conclude on at 12:00 a.m. est on Saturday 2/1/14. Winners will be announced via rafflecopter & in a separate blog post which will be published no later than 3:00 p.m. on Saturday 2/1/14. Happy Birthday Paige!

My first born, a.k.a. my mini-me, is 8 today!

Happy Birthday, Paige! Even though you're sick, I hope you had a great birthday.

I love you!

Mom

Think It Thursday: Why I Want to be a Yogi

It all began with a hollow back handstand. Not by me of course, but that picture was what started me on my journey to becoming a yogi. I still consider myself a beginner, but the benefits I've reaped is what keeps me motivated.

So, why do I want to be a yogi?

See my Pin!
The Workout - Most don't consider yoga as a form of exercise, but my clothes fit much better & that speaks volumes to me!

Stress Less - In times of high stress, I've learned to breathe. To take a step back & genuinely breathe. Of course I still stress here & there, but nowhere near as much as I used to.

Lower Blood Pressure - I am almost out of my blood pressure medication. Almost as in I've been taking my last 1 month supply for the last 3 months. But the good news, is that my blood pressure is still in the range that my doctor wants it to be.

Better Performance - Yoga helps with flexibility, or "being bendy" in yogi speak. Add that to the better breathing & my other workouts seem like a piece of cake! Well, not really since I've increased my reps, but I get much farther before it gets difficult.

Healthy Lifestyle - One thing I've noticed is that I've been making healthier decisions. Of course I still indulge or eat the occasional fattening food, but if I don't get fresh fruits or veggies at just about every meal...

Be Happy - Being happy is just synonymous with being a yogi.

Work It Wednesday: How to Unwind for a Good Night's Sleep

With so much to do these days, sleep sometimes seems like an impossible task. Especially if you have kids. Which means that an uninterrupted 8 hours of slumber...only happens in our dreams. Or we're super sick & in that case it doesn't count. But I have noticed that, for me anyways, a good quality 6 hours does the job. As long as I take the time to unwind before bed, I tend to sleep like a baby (even if I get woken up 5 times).

Keep a Schedule - If we're such sticklers for keeping schedules during the day, why wouldn't we stick to one when it comes to sleeping too? Go to bed the same time every night & get up the same time every morning. And yes, there's always room for a 30 min. window (at least that's what I tell myself).

Dim the Lights - Just about every time I turn the lights off to watch a movie, I fall asleep. It must be my mind's signal that it's time to sleep. So dimming the lights is like a yellow traffic light telling you to slow down because you're going to need to stop soon.

Turn Off the TV - If you're anything like me, you'll make yourself stay up just to find out what happened at the end of the show you're watching. Got a DVR? Program it to record & read a book instead.

Cool Down the Temp - Ever notice how you sleep better in the Spring & Fall? Not too hot, not too cold. So turn down the thermostat a couple degrees & grab an extra blanket instead.

Avoid Caffeine - This should be a no brainer, no caffeine before bed. But ideally it should be no caffeine 4-5 hours before bed.

Skip the Midnight Snack - I know it's tempting, but going after that cookie right before bed will just make you feel all icky. Or maybe that's just me. Hey, you can't have just one cookie! See, vicious cycle in the making.

Do Yoga - Savasana, also known as the corpse pose, is perfect to do before bed. Actually, you can even do it in bed. Lay on your back & concentrate on your breathing. Get that, breathing. Not what you didn't get done that day or everything you have to do the next. Just breathing. It's amazing how much you can relax when you're able to clear your mind.

Red Leaf Tea: Eggnog Matcha & a Giveaway!

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

It really is nice to be able to indulge in a drink that is actually packed full of nutritional benefits. And Matcha, a powdered form of green tea leaves, is just that.

The folks at Red Leaf Tea were kind enough to send me another of their flavored Matchas to try, Eggnog Matcha. How did they know how much I love my eggnog?! (Seriously, we go through a lot during the holidays.) So again, I decided to whip up a cold latte, just with a few tweaks.

Favorite mason jar glass & glass straw!
I always get the flavored eggnogs, since I'm not really a fan of the plain. So I wasn't too sure how I would like a basic eggnog flavor. Well, after I blended my Eggnog Matcha, almost 1C. milk & a few ice cubes I tasted it. Yea, not my cup of tea (literally). So I added 1tsp. of vanilla & 3 heaping tsp. of sugar and blended again. Perfect.

One  lucky winner will receive one small bag of Eggnog Matcha!

The giveaway will conclude on at 12:00 a.m. est on Saturday 1/25/14. Winners will be announced via rafflecopter & in a separate blog post which will be published no later than 3:00 p.m. on Saturday 1/25/14. Tasty Tuesday: Cheesy Caramelized Burgers

There's a drive-in that has the best cheeseburgers ever. Whenever we go, my stomach instantly turns into a bottomless pit. I usually order 2 double cheeseburgers with the works (sometimes 3), potato teezers with a side of ranch (think tater tot meets jalapeno popper) & a large vanilla malt milkshake with extra vanilla. But in my defense, we only go about once a year, if that. I've learned to accept that, if for no other reason than I make my own version of my beloved cheeseburgers at home. (I'm still working on the potato teezers.)

•hamburger buns
•butter or margarine
•1lb. hamburger
•1/3C. brown sugar
•cheddar cheese sauce (I like Ragu)
•onion, thinly sliced
•pickle chips (I prefer the sweet & spicy kind)
•yellow mustard

- In a nonstick skillet, butter & toast hamburger bun halves. Set aside.
- In a medium sized bowl, thoroughly mix hamburger & brown sugar. Shape into patties.
- In the same skillet, cook patties over med-high heat until done & nicely caramelized (roughly 7-10 min.).
- To assemble, place a hamburger patty on bun bottom & top with cheddar cheese sauce, onion slices, pickle chips & yellow mustard. Replace bun top.
- Grab a napkin & enjoy!

Red Leaf Tea: Caramel Matchaccino

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I'm sure you've heard all the benefits of green tea by now. From helping with weight loss to heart disease & even depression (along with many other of course). But did you ever realize that you get all of those benefits from steeping the green tea leaves in water. What kind of benefits would you get if you actually consumed the green tea leaves?

Matcha is a green tea powdered mix that is all natural (it is powdered green tea leaves after all). You get all of the benefits you would with a standard green tea, along with a jolt of added fiber & antioxidants.

Red Leaf Tea carries a huge variety of flavored Matcha & I had the opportunity to try their Caramel Matchaccino. I opted for the cold latte that was recommended (especially since I didn't have a bamboo whisk that is recommended for the hot latte).

Immediately I noticed the delicious caramel aroma that filled the air, so I eagerly prepared my Caramel Matchaccino. It was simple to make, just the Matcha, about 1C. of milk & a few ice cubes in the blender for about 30-45 seconds. Then poured into my favorite mason jar glass & with my favorite glass straw, I was ready for my first sip of caramel heaven.

I really loved how prominent the caramel was while it still had a green tea taste. The added energy I got from it was just a bonus.

Messy Monday: Homemade Soft Scrub Cleanser

I used to swear by Soft Scrub. I would use it on virtually any surface I could. Then I realized the amount of money I was spending on it, so I cut back. But when I started paying attention to what cleaners I was using & made an effort to use more natural ones, I quit using it completely. At least the store bought version of it.

•1/2C. baking soda
•1/4C. dish soap
•3Tbsp. vinegar

- Stir dish soap into baking soda.
- Carefully add vinegar & stir to combine.
- Store in an airtight container.

Simple Sunday: Old Family Photos

Every now & then I go through some old photos. But there are a few that are noticeably older. Some I know who they are & some I don't. (This is even just some of my old photos, I have more in another photo box.)

But my favorite out of this bunch, is the photo of my Grandma & her brother when they were just toddlers (early-mid 1930's).

Original Sprout: "Worry Free Luxury"

This review has been a long time coming as they say (that is what they say, right?). But I really put Original Sprout to the test. And I have to say that this is exactly what I have been looking for, for what seems like forever! (That was a lot of for's.) You see, my oldest daughter, Paige, still has her baby fine hair. She also has a distaste for having her hair done in any way & despite my best efforts, doesn't understand why it even needs brushed more than once a day. Add it all together & it can be disastrous. Her hair was much shorter on one side from numerous knots, so her last cut was to even it all out. That was at the start of the school year & it's barely grown since.

I wasn't looking for a miracle product, but something that would help strengthen her hair & help keep it from knotting up easily. Most of the children's hair care products didn't help. But I didn't want to use adult products on her hair since I was afraid they would only damage her baby fines.

Original Sprout was created by Inga Tritt, a mother & master stylist. Not only are the products made with safe ingredients that deliver salon quality, but the whole family can use them.

Hair & Body Babywash

I have to say that this babywash surpassed any other babywash I have ever used on my kids. Which in a way is a shame since I'm done having babies. But I still used this on my brood & they seemed to actually enjoy it, especially when it came to washing their hair. Not only was the Hair & Body Babywash super easy to rinse out, but the couple times that they got it in their eyes, they didn't completely spaz. Don't get me wrong, there was some spazzing, but it was more of a "just because" kind of spaz.

I used this on Paige for about a week & could notice the difference in her hair. It seemed like it had more life to it & was much easier to work with. Not to mention less knots! It was a happy mama moment for sure!

Deep Conditioner

I have almost waist length hair that can be a nightmare when I leave it down in the winter. Which means that I try to use the best conditioner to keep it manageable. And I'll admit, I was curious at how well this would work on my hair since it can be used on everyone in the family. But the results left me amazed. I could easily comb through my hair with my fingers & after it had air dried, I had no frizz. The bonus for me though, was that my hair was moisturized enough to help combat static!

Paige used the Deep Conditioner with our usual children's shampoo for a week. (I did it that way to really see the results of the conditioner alone.) Her hair had less breakage than usual & her ends seemed like they got a bit fuller. While still having less knots of course.

Natural Shampoo

I love the way the Natural Shampoo smells. Of course everything I received from Original Sprout smelled heavenly, but this one in particular made me think I was in a salon. Of course it has the quality to go with it. This shampoo is perfect for those who color their hair since it says it helps preserve color. I don't, so I can't back that up, but I can say that I loved the deep down clean. The only thing missing was someone to massage my head (LOL).

Again, Paige used the Natural Shampoo (sans Deep Conditioner) for a week. We found that it performed just as the hair & Body Babywash had, just with a more grown up scent.

Of course Paige used the Natural Shampoo & Deep Conditioner together for a week as well, which is by far the best combination for her hair. Although her hair is still baby fine, it seems a bit fuller. It's more manageable & healthy too. And now I don't argue with her as much when she doesn't want to wear her hair up (which is never), because I know that her hair won't be full of knots by the end of the day.

Natural Hair Gel

This Natural Hair Gel is amazing! I used it on my hair as well as on the kids. The hold was great & it didn't leave a trail of hardened hair in it's wake. I really loved the way it brought out my natural waves without even looking like I had any product in my hair. I even had several people comment about how great my hair looked, especially for being in the dead of winter.

I was really curious how this would work on Paige's baby fines, but she had the same outcome as I had on my hair.

Her hair is a bit crazy, but I made her stop in the middle of playing to snap a pic.
